Webinar Recap: Advancing Location Intelligence: Accessing Indoor Maps from RapidSOS Portal

On Tuesday, December 8th, 2020, GeoComm and RapidSOS hosted a webinar titled Advancing Location Intelligence:  Accessing Indoor Maps from RapidSOS Portal.

GeoComm’s John Brosowsky, Vice President of Innovation and RapidSOS’ Karin Marquez, Senior Director of Public Safety sat down to discuss:

  • Why now is the right time to equip 9-1-1 call takers and emergency responders with indoor location intelligence
  • The value indoor maps offer when combined with improved 9-1-1 caller location coordinates and Esri’s industry-leading mapping technology
  • How to leverage location intelligence through RapidSOS Portal to create unprecedented situational awareness

Location is the most important piece of information in an emergency. With over 80 percent of 911 calls coming from cell phones—many of them from citizens located indoors—it is critical that first responders have accurate information on where incidents are occurring.

Over the past few years, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted new rules to help 9-1-1 telecommunicators locate calls from mobile phones originating indoors. At the same time supplemental caller location systems such as Android ELS and Apple HELO have emerged that are now providing device-based hybrid locations to 9-1-1 telecommunicators via RapidSOS. As device-based hybrid location continues to improve, and carriers work to meet new FCC rules, now is the time to create an ultra-actionable view into emergency locations, specifically indoor locations, that can help streamline emergency response processes and reduce response times.

GeoComm, an industry leader in public safety location-based solutions, and RapidSOS, the trusted data provider for over 4,800 emergency communications centers (ECCs), have joined with international GIS mapping company, Esri, to help bring 9-1-1 personnel and first responders a new offering that brings indoor maps onto RapidSOS Portal, a web-based emergency management tool.  This partnership provides accurate caller location and other critical data through the context of indoor maps, creating an advanced view of the emergency.  Through this partnership, RapidSOS will soon be integrated with Esri’s ArcGIS and GeoComm’s indoor mapping technology to empower safer and more resilient communities.

Public Safety Location Intelligence: The Future of Emergency Response

Public safety location intelligence is becoming the foundation of modern emergency response. As 9-1-1 centers, law enforcement agencies, schools, and emergency response teams adopt new technologies like indoor mapping, artificial intelligence, drones as first responders, and real-time situational awareness platforms, one thing remains essential: accurate, trusted location data. Without it, even the most advanced public...
