Q8: Is the data really free for downloading?
All datasets contained in the GIS Data Depot are available for FREE
download (except for DRGs and DOQQs - as of May 1, 2002). A majority of the data is downloadable at the county level (or
lowest geography for other countries).
We also provide people with a mechanism to write bundles of data (to CD) for a fee.
Examples of data bundles would be all of Vermont DRGs or All of the DCW
data for Canada. Our fee structure basically involves a very nominal setup fee
(currently $14.95), and a
write fee that ranges from $0.10 to $0.50 per compressed MB written.
In general, the bigger the bundle the lower the average write fee. Further,
because all data is publically available information, we do not license or
restrict its use in any way other than asking that people do not simply
copy the CDs and resell them.
