Q28: The compressed .GZ file that I just downloaded is not recognized as a valid archive.
What can I do?

Although we haven't been able to determine when or why this problem has started to occur, we have found a couple of solutions that seem to work.

1) The problem seems to mostly effect users downloading with Netscape as the selected Web browser. The problem doesn't seem to occur when users have downloaded data files using the Internet Explorer Web browser.

2) If you must use Netscape as your Web browser we have found that the following steps within Netscape's EDIT/PREFERENCES setting can resolve the problem:

a) In your Netscape Web Browser select the EDIT/PREFERENCES options.

b) Then select the NAVIGATOR/APPLICATIONS path from the directory tree on the left of the window.

c) Click the "New Type" button.

d) Complete the dialog box with the following:

Description of Type: Any name you select ("GZ Type" for example)

File Extension: GZ

Mime Type: application/x-zip-compressed

Application to Use: [enter/browse to path of the WINZIP32.exe program] "%1"

Please keep in mind that any data that you have already downloaded with this problem will need to be downloaded once again.
