Q26:I am having difficulty downloading FREE data from the GIS Data Depot, what should I do?

Download Problems

The GIS Data Depot recently modified its back office infrastructure regarding the process used to download data. We have made changes in order to better control the access and use of the site. This was done to give all users (regardless of bandwidth) equal access to the FREE data. Due to these changes there are some users who have experienced difficulty downloading data. We have provided below a small list of the new download guidelines and potential options for users still experiencing difficulty downloading data.

New Download Guidelines

    1. Maximum Bytes Per Second (bps) is 20Kbps per file.

    2. Maximum of 20 concurrent downloads per CLIENT IP. Please note that this limit will affect people behind corporate firewalls because most firewalls translate internal IP's to a single external IP. If the maximum number of CLIENT downloads is reached one of the following messages will happen:

      (a) For a Browser using left button to download file(s):

Sorry, maximum number clients (20) from your host already connected.

      (b) For a Browser using "Save File/Target as...." to download file(s):

The download window will simply attempt to connect and close without a warning message.

    3. Maximum of 150 total concurrent downloads on this site. If the maximum number of total concurrent downloads is reached the following message appears:

"The maximum number of concurrent users has been reached, please try your download later."

    4. Several users that use an Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser have experienced difficulty downloading data. We recommend that Internet Explorer 4.0 users that encounter problems try using either Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape.

Download Suggestions (Q & A)

  1. Q) When downloading in Netscape using the left mouse button I see the data and it doesn't download the file. Then while remaining in the page I immediately attempt to use the "Save Link As...." it quickly saves a file. This still doesn't download the file correctly. How can I correctly download this file?

    A) Go back to the "Download" button, click again, then use the (Right Click) "Save Link As..." to download file.

  2. Q) When using my Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser I can no longer download data.

    A) We recommend that users try using either Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape.

  3. Q) I have a Cox@home cable modem and cannot download files.

    A) Cox@home uses a customized version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. (Cox @ home version 1.7, IE version 5.0). We recommend downloading Netscape Communicator to remedy this problem. Netscape will work fine with your Cox@home modem.
