Corporate - Our History

Corporate > About Us > Our History
In June 1995, The GeoCommunity began as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) company providing customized mapping applications and technical services for a variety of government and private sector clients. Based on extensive experience in GIS consulting services and application development, GeoComm (our original corporate name) recognized that geographic data (content) was the most valuable commodity in all the elements of GIS (hardware, software, services, data).

Leveraging Internet technologies in July 1998, GeoComm launched the GIS Data Depotä. This website allowed GIS professionals to download free geographic data with the option of 2-day delivery on CD for a nominal charge, and the convenience of ‘one-stop shopping’ via the Internet.

Soon thereafter, the GIS Data Depotä was redesigned to integrate an acquired news-oriented website (SpatialNews.com), renamed to the GeoCommunityä (www.GeoComm.com) and launched on July 27, 1999. This site is targeted at professionals in the GIS industry to foster an on-line community of users, buyers, sellers, and advertisers to create a virtual marketplace.

Today, The GeoCommunity is the leading Internet provider of geographic data products, services and advertising on the Internet.

The GeoCommunity also has a strong presence in the cellular/wireless communications industry. Our Wireless SourceDisks mapping software product is used by market analysts at over 200 companies in the wireless industry, including all the major carriers and several investment banks. We have strategic partnerships with both the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) and Wireless Review Magazine.

In February 2000, the Wireless Developer Networkä, a website targeted at the growing community of application developers for the Wireless Web industry, was acquired. As we continue to move forward, we will continue to acquire and develop online communities supporting technical professionals in high growth markets.
